HOW YOU CAN HAVE YOUR CAKE AND EAT IT TOO!

Aug 31, 2020

Can you even imagine never dieting again?

With such a strong pull towards our diet culture in society today, especially while we scroll through social media there is no wonder why women (and even men) feel overwhelmed and anxious about what to do to lose weight, get healthy or even what is the right thing to eat?

What if I told you there is a way that you can have your cake and eat it too?

IMAGINE IT! Only every focusing on what is FUELLING your body and never punishing it again!

This is what I call INTUITIVE EATING..

Intuitive eating isn’t as airy fairy as it appears to be. It isn’t a means to an end like every diet can be.  It is a set of tools (that’s right, not rules) and skills to give you freedom from food and to open up the rest of your life outside of food and body worry.

One of the biggest questions I ask my nutrition clients to ask themselves before they eat anything is… “Am I going to feel good before, during and after this”.  The answer will guide you into if you really should be eating/drinking whatever it is in front of you..

For example:

You desperately want to have that bottle of wine and cheese platter because “you deserve it” after your long week…  Of course you are going to feel great before you eat/drink it, you might even feel ok when you start to eat/drink BUT after a while and definitely after you are NOT going to feel great so on a regular basis this is NOT going to fuel your body and make you feel great about YOU either…

Some really great tools to get started on your journey include:

  1. START A VISUAL DIARY 📷
Take photos of your food and upload them into a portal where you can see your habits.  Also focus on how you are feeling before and after a meal.  The patterns will start to become very clear
  1. HONOUR YOUR HUNGER 🙏
Hunger is a normal, biological process. Your body needs to know and trust that you will  consistently fuel it with great nutritional foods. If you try to override feelings of hunger and don’t eat enough calories and carbohydrates, your body reacts with cravings and binges. Are there times when you feel hunger, but didn’t eat? How come? I’d love to hear your answers to this 😊
  1. MAKE PEACE WITH YOUR PLATE ☮️
It’s time to stop categorizing foods as “good” or “bad” – no one food has the power to make you healthy, just like no one food has the power to make you unhealthy. If you tell yourself you can’t have or shouldn’t have a certain food, you will eventually feel deprived and like you are going with out.  This can build into uncontrollable cravings and overeating. When you finally “give in” and eat the labelled “bad food” you’re likely to overeat without even realising it! Overeating triggers guilt and shame and there we go on the cycle of diet & deprivation → cravings and overeating → feelings of guilt.

Research has shown that intuitive eating will bring you…

  • Higher self-esteem
  • Better body image
  • More satisfaction with life
  • Optimism and well-being
  • Proactive coping skills
  • Lower body mass indexes
  • Lower rates of emotional eating
  • Lower rates of disordered eating

What a wonderful way to teach our next generations to fuel their bodies.  The ability to use all our senses in choosing to eat food that is both satisfying and nourishing to our body. The skill to become aware of physical hunger and satiety cues to guide your decisions to begin and end eating.
